Zhiqiang Guan

Zhiqiang Guan is a Senior Advisor to the Asia healthcare team.  He is based in Shanghai.  

Prior to working with Carlyle, Dr. Guan worked in the healthcare industry in China gaining experience in market access, people development, industrial policy shaping and business development.  Acting as a senior executive, Dr. Guan worked for various healthcare MNCs including Pfizer, Merck Sharp & Dohme, and Bristol Myers Squibb. At those MNCs, Dr. Guan built new functional teams designed to face challenges in bringing new innovative medicines into the Chinese market, shape national and local pricing and reimbursing policies, improve hospital listing strategies and implement sales plans. Dr. Guan obtained investing experience from 2017-2020 when he was the founding CEO of West China Dental Company in Chengdu, a state-owned investment company focused on dental care.  

From 1986 to 2007, before moving to the private sector, Dr. Guan worked as a health policy researcher and senior manager for many public institutions including Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Health in Harbin, New York City Department of Health in New York, Foreign Loan Office Ministry of Health in Beijing, Institute of Hospital Administration of Ministry of Health in Beijing, and National Institute of Social Security Ministry of Labor and Social Security.  In those roles, Dr. Guan participated in local and central health policy making processes including the New York City Healthy Start program (1997-1999), China’s national health insurance system framework (2001-2007) and Anti-SARS Social Policy in Beijing (2003).

Dr. Guan received his medical degrees from University of Heilongjiang Chinese Medicine and Harbin Medical University.  He also earned a Master of Public Health from Columbia University.
